Blog #3 ELA Standards

Since I would like to teach third grade, I researched and studied the ELA standards specifically for third grade. I would be the most prepared to teach craft and structure. Craft and structure refers to stories, dramas, poems, and movies to determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text. I would then take it a step further and speak about point of views in the narrative. I enjoy teaching this skill and I practiced it while completing my internship last semester! The skill I would need to learn more about before teaching would be teaching the conventions of standard English. Including abstract nouns, irregular and regular verbs, and punctuation.

While there are many helpful sources in the CPALMS Educator Toolkit, I think I would use the lesson plan resource. I would use it to guide myself on what my students should be learning while also coming up with fun activities to go with these lesson plans. Another tool I found compelling that I would want to incorporate was the "critical thinking and reflection of visual art." Art is something I feel strongly about incorporating into my future classroom. I think it is important to encourage the student to explore their creative side as early as possible!

The Newsletter Design project was much more challenging than I originally expected. Through this process, I have definitely gained a certain level of respect for those teachers who create their own weekly newsletters, instead of using a shared templet. One thing I found challenging was organizing the columns in the newsletter to make it easy to read. Many times I would have my layout exactly how I wanted stand then the column would shift and throw everything off balance! If I could critique my final newsletter I would say I wish I would have made the font size bigger. Making it less stressful for the parents to read. While this was frustrating, I am very glad I experienced creating this assignment because I know it will serve its purpose in the future! I hope to create my own newsletters one day to show my students that I care and want it to be special for them!

  1. Aubrey,
I also struggled with the newsletter design assignment and found it very challenging but also helpful in order to understand Microsoft Word in a creative manner. I think it is cool that you have already had some experience with teaching craft and structure during your internship and know that you enjoy that aspect of teaching.
