Blog 8: Diigo & Powerpoint
Diigo is a very helpful tool that I am thankful was introduced to me through this course. Diigo allows you to highlight, annotate, bookmark, and share different articles. This application can be useful in a classroom in many different ways. One way would be to assign students a weekly reading and ask them to highlight and annotate different aspects of the article they found interesting. I think it would be really neat to have each student's annotation visible to the entire classroom as they read each weekly article. Doing this will allow students to read other viewpoints and help them broaden their knowledge when it comes to analyzing text. This will also allow the educator to view the areas they need to work on!
When it comes to Bloom's Taxonomy, Powerpoint can be used in many ways to enhance and accomplish each level of the student's learning process. From bottom up, powerpoint can include pictures, sound, videos and even voice recordings to help the student remember the information. Next, the student can apply the correlation between a certain image or sound with an idea or word in order to understand the content. Powerpoint can then give examples of something the student would recognize today that applies to the content we are learning. For example, in my assignment #4, my lesson was on Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad. To explain the significance of the heroic efforts displayed by Harriet Tubman, I can ask the student who their hero is. How their hero makes them feel. This helps the student apply those same feelings and understanding to how important Harriet Tubman. An educator can use powerpoint to tell non fiction stories and use real pictures to help the student evaluate the meaning of the message. For example, in my assignment I included real pictures of the Underground Railroad. Lastly, Powerpoint can aid in allowing the students to create their own senerio and situation on their own. After developing a detailed understanding of the information, they can then move on to create!
I chose elearning industry as my website to stay up to date with the new technologies entering the classroom. Now that we live in such a technology driven world, education is bound to be affected. While many think that technology devices hinder education, there are many technologies that improve student learning. Teachers are given the task to embrace technologies and incorporate them into daily lessons. Not only is this a challenging task, the financial burden that comes with teachers involving technology in their classroom is enormous. However, once teachers adapt technology, professional development and increased student engagement will occur in their classroom!

I would be interested in reading an article by someone who thinks technologies hinders education. I have only read things from people who support technology advancements in the classroom!
ReplyDeleteI agree that Diigo can be a fun and very effective way for students to learn, but only if they each have the ability to access computers. That is one aspect of Diigo that might be a con, is that not all students have access to computers and many classrooms only offer a couple computers so it might only be useful in upper level education such as college.
ReplyDeleteElearning sounds like such a cool website! I would love to read more articles put out by them. I agree with you about how incorporating technology into the classroom is a financial burden. Especially since teachers have to pay for their own supplies for their classroom on top of everything else.
ReplyDeleteI really like your idea of having students use Diigo to annotate weekly readings. That could be applied in any subject area, but I definitely would want to apply it myself since I want to teach English.
